Leading with Legacy: Lessons from Black History

A time to reflect, honor, and lead with intention.

Hi Leaders,

Let’s get real for a moment: Black History Month isn’t just about honoring the past. It’s a blueprint for what leadership can and should look like. It’s personal for me. As a Black woman and leader, this month reminds me of the shoulders I stand on and the responsibility I carry to pay it forward.

When we think about legacy leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Harriet Tubman, it’s easy to see the big moments. But here’s the truth: their impact wasn’t just about speeches or daring acts of courage. It was about how they lifted others, redefined what was possible, and created pathways that would outlast them.

You don’t need a stage or a revolution to leave a legacy. You just need the courage to lead with intention and inclusivity, right where you are.

Inclusive leadership isn’t just a concept. It’s your secret weapon. It’s how you create teams that don’t just survive but thrive. It’s how you spark innovation, build trust, and lead in a way that people will talk about long after the work is done.

So how do you start? Here’s the playbook:

Expand Your Circle

Look at who you turn to for advice or fresh ideas. If it’s the same few people, it’s time to mix it up. Seek out voices that challenge your thinking. Growth doesn’t happen in an echo chamber, it happens when you invite perspectives that push you further.

Build Cultural Intelligence

Want your team to thrive? Go beyond their roles and get to know them. Ask, "What’s one thing you wish people understood about you?" This single question can create deeper connections, remove unseen barriers, and unlock new levels of trust.

Lead with Legacy in Mind

Ask yourself: what will you be remembered for? Beyond promotions and goals, are you creating a culture where everyone can succeed? Are you building systems that outlast you? This is the kind of leadership that gets noticed and remembered.

Why It Matters

Black History Month isn’t just about reflection, I like to think of this month as a call to action. It’s a reminder that inclusive leadership isn’t a trend. It’s the foundation of progress. When you commit to leading this way, you’re building a legacy.

The leaders we celebrate this month didn’t wait for permission to create change. They stepped up. Now it’s your turn. Let’s honor their work by continuing it. You’ve got everything you need to lead with courage, purpose, and impact.

You’ve got this,

Stephanie
